Orwell-a-day

The 1984 Channeling Society is getting more and more crowded.

Michael Moore's new film Fahrenheit 9/11 goes as far as to quote 1984 in the closing passage.  This surprised me because it isn't a very happy ending and, in fact, opens up an entirely different line of reasoning from that of simply exposing our illustrious president.  In the thread of the film, I thought that it was a weak point.

However, I understand why Michael put it in there because that's what this blog was doing for more than a year: taking everyday happenings from the papers and accompanying them with excerpts from 1984.

I decided to stop this blog because, ultimately, the tone is too ominous, too foreboding, to do it every day, making it about as palatable as a daily dose of Salinger or Cheever.  It's not that it isn't true/important, but that it's a turnoff, and even bloggers need to be aware of this.

Still some things are surprising.  For 1984-style history modification, there's nothing quite like this
article from my other blog.

Orwell Rolls in his Grave - A Film by Robert Kane Pappas (DVD) -- A BuzzFlash Premium:
"This is a must see, a wake-up call to America that we have already entered an Orwellian world when history, context, and language are redefined daily by the government, as the media broadcasts the new version of the truth without question. Every news cycle starts with a clean slate for the White House 'Ministry of Truth' to write on."

One of the reasons that I started working more on my other blog, BubbaLogic, is that the Orwell sightings field is getting very crowded.

Krugman: Get Me Rewrite!

"Right now America is going through an Orwellian moment. On both the foreign policy and the fiscal fronts, the Bush administration is trying to rewrite history, to explain away its current embarrassments."

With folks like Krugman, no more need for Orwell-a-day!

TheStar.com - British Airways jitters continue
""'The threat that we now face is likely to endure for many years,' he added in a BBC interview, without giving more details.
'There may occasionally, from time to time, be the need to ground a particular flight ... but the vast majority of people will be able to fly in the normal way.'
"

That's the perpetual war schtick so familiar to 1984 readers. And we may also question the reality of these "threats" which seem all-too-designed to keep the population on edge, cowering in the face of everyday security.

Yahoo! News - Former U.K. Intelligence Worker Arrested

"Police charged a former British intelligence employee with breaking state secrecy laws Thursday, after she was linked to the disclosure of a memo in which U.S. officials allegedly asked for British help in eavesdropping on U.N. envoys.

Katharine Gun, 29, who worked as a translator for the Government Communications Headquarters, was arrested in March after a British newspaper published the memo, which came as the United States still hoped to win U.N. backing for the war in Iraq.
"

This story was entirely ignored in the US media, excepting MSNBC.

Whiskey Bar: Lynching Private Lynch

"Needless to say, the people formerly doing the spinning aren't too happy to find their top now has a mind of its own. Having 'saved' Private Lynch, the conservative propaganda machine is now looking for a way to destroy her. Turning Jessica Lynch into Jane Fonda may prove a little bit harder than convincing the true believers we've always been at war with Eurasia. But perhaps not much."

Everyone is tuned into the 1984 channel these days.

Thanks to cursor.
